Odds and Ends

Bits and pieces from Miller Manor....

The girl who introduced us to Laika, Mariah Mountanos, was recently featured in the local pet paper, Fetch.

This morning on our walk, we found a little garter snake in the street. We moved him over to the nearby grass, but it was pretty cold and he was pretty sluggish. On the way back from our walk, I scooped him up, took this photo, then let him go in the yard, under a bit of grass where I hope he was safe from the local crows.

Sometimes our cats show a dry sense of humor, especially puns. Steve noticed this cat pun this morning..."underdog"....

What's the blurry thing behind the branch here? That's a baby Red-tailed Hawk!

Here's some of the reasons I get to have a site called auntt.com...we were all happy to watch hometown hero Sam Hornish win in the exiting last moments at Indy -- I was surprised we didn't see some of Redwood City's finest at the doorstep after all the noise we made! These were taken during some quieter moments...

And, finally, we can't resist yet more Laika photos -- being cute on the chair with her rope chew, and a couple of shots from dog training class.

This is AuntT, awash in a sea of kleenex and Claritin allergy tablets, over and out...

Our New Darlings

Aren't they adorable? We can't wait until their actual arrival on Monday. We're thrilled and really couldn't be happier. We've waited for this blessed moment for a very long time, and hope to have many happy years with them ahead of us.

Until then, you might want to stay upwind!

Chernobyl Dead Zone Rider

Updated June 15, 2005

Her website section "Ghost Town" begins, "My name is Elena. I run this website and I don't have anything to sell. What I do have is my motorbike and the absolute freedom to ride it wherever curiosity and the speed demon take me. This page is maintained by the author, but when internet traffic is heavy it may be down occasionally.

Her story is an amazing one, of riding her motorcycle through the Chernobyl "dead zone", the site of the 1986 nuclear disaster. It's several pages long, and is riviting. Plan to spend some time reading it.

It turns out that this story was a hoax. In New York Times article about tourism in Chernobyl they mention:

One group came for a hoax. About two years ago, Mr. Tatarchuk said, a Ukrainian woman booked a tour, wore a leather biker jacket and posed for pictures. Soon there appeared a Web site in which the woman, using the name Elena, claimed that she had been given an unlimited pass by her father, a nuclear physicist and Chernobyl researcher ("Thank you, Daddy!" she wrote) and now roamed the ruins at will on her Kawasaki Big Ninja.
The site, www.kiddofspeed.com, billed as a tale "where one can ride with no stoplights, no police, no danger to hit some cage or some dog," was a sensation, duping uncountable viewers before being discredited.

They certainly duped me.

Garden 2005

We planted garden a month ago. With the rainiest May in 117 years in this part of the country, you'd think it would be off to a better start than it is. In any case, here's the plan (click to see a bigger view):

The Fava Beans, despite two attempts with the seeds, aren't coming up at all, and I may replant that with more peas. Some of the flowers are also not coming up. I haven't found the eggplant and basil plants we want yet, so those are still empty squares. So we'll just have to see how it goes.

Speaking of the weather, here's the blog entry I wrote for makezine.com about a weather station I've been playing with.

Welcome to AuntT.com!

Hello! Welcome to my new web site! This is where I'll be posting photos, links, and other fun for family.

This page is built with MovableType, which is software for weblogging. If you've heard of "blogs" and "bloggers", this is the kind of thing they're talking about. Each entry I post here will appear at the top of the home page. As I make more posts, they'll each appear at the top, moving the previous posts down the page and into the archives (which you can get to using the links in the right column here).

You can also comment on these posts. However, to do that you'll need to go get a TypeKey acccount. You can do that here. TypeKey sets up a "key" with a username and password you choose. Then when you comment on my weblog here (or other weblogs), it will ask for your username and password. By limiting comments only to people who have registered with TypeKey, I can prevent comment "spam" - abusive comments left by spammers who only want to get their links seen. If people make abusive comments while registered with TypeKey, the folks at TypeKey can block them from commenting on all registered weblogs.

You don't have to register with TypeKey to read this website or browse around and see what's posted -- you only need it if you want to leave comments.
